Italy and Croatia - It might've been Otherwise

Venice

I just returned from a vacation to Croatia and Italy. I love traveling and yet, I love coming back to the comfort of home. I had views of incredible landscapes, delicious food and wine, warm welcomes from strangers and ways of seeing life through another culture. The two weeks were also filled with jet lag, challenging Tuscan hills to bike, and retrieving our rental car from the Croatia police after it was towed. While there were moments I wanted to be in better shape or wanted things to be slightly different, I am grateful for the life I have, a healthy body and good friends to share adventures with. It reminds me of a poem by Jane Kenyon called Otherwise.

Otherwise

I got out of bed on two strong legs.

It might have been otherwise.

I ate cereal, sweet milk, ripe, flawless peach.

It might have been otherwise.

I took the dog uphill to the birchwood. All morning I did the work I love.

At noon I lay down with my mate.

It might have been otherwise.

We ate dinner together at a table with silver candlesticks.

It might have been otherwise.

I slept in a bed in a room with paintings on the walls and planned another day just like this day.

But one day, I know, it will be otherwise.

Reflecting on this, how might you meet this day?
